One out of three men at rist of prostate cancer- Report

The director-general of Ghana Health Service, Doctor Patrick Kuma Aboagye during the National Prostate Cancer Dialogue 2024 which took effect on Wednesday, 2nd October 2024 has released statistics about prostate cancer.

According to the statistics, in 2022 globally there were 20 millions cases of prostate cancer along with 9.7 million deaths. In the same year, Ghana recorded 7,000 new cases of cancer with almost 18,000 associated deaths. Out of this, prostate cancer featured 2,395 new cases, accounting for about 21 percent of all male cancers.

According to the report, about one out of three men aged 40 years and above are at risk of prostate cancer and it remains the leading caused of death among men.

In the reports provided by Dr. Kuma-Aboagye, leading causes of prostate cancer include increasing age, family history of condition, race, ethnicity, obesity and diet. He noted that these statistics requires national and sub-national conserted effort to address them.
